Envogue, an all female American R n B group, released Free Your Mind in the early 90’s as part of the album whose title I don’t remember :D. I heard this song for the first time at age 8 or 9 and for the next 6 years or there about it was one of my favourites, but at the time I mostly just loved the ear splitting strings. Anyway, the song is an anti-prejudice campaign against judging people by the way they look which is very cliché if you ask me.
“I wear tight clothing, high heeled shoes It doesn’t mean that I’m a prostitute,…”
Strong words right? In our society people are judged by the things they like, the clothes they wear, the kind of people they hang with, but in reality is any of these a good criterion for classification? I’ve come to realise that I don’t like what I don’t understand, therefore I assume I hate it.In relation to people, I’ve realised that when we say we don’t like someone, it’s usually because we don’t know them. Saying I don’t like a certain person could be due to a lack of understanding of that person. Of course there is no ruling out the exception that there are those I don’t like plain and simple. Bottom line is, it’s wrong to judge people based on what we see, we may be on to something, but don’t assume without giving them a chance at redemption.
The popular saying, ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ cannot be over emphasised. It’s just like picking a copy of C. S. Lewis‘ ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe‘ and saying, “who believes in talking lions anyway”… That would be the greatest Faux pas in reading history.
En Vogue sang,
“before you can read me, you’ve got to learn how to see me….”
If you don’t free your mind you will never realise the good in a supposed bad thing or the ton of intelligence in an otherwise mundane package.
My Take: She likes to look good, use top of the line gadgets, it doesn’t make her a ‘Runs’ girl. She just might be your soul mate. I enjoy hip hop music and like to wear baggy clothes, it doesn’t mean I smoke weed or do drugs. Underneath might be a rather engaging personality. I’m wary of the people I hang with, I’m choosy when it comes to guys and socialising, it doesn’t make me a snob. I’m just cautious. That I don’t eat swallow doesn’t make me ‘Ajebo’ I could be allergic. If you do not free your mind then you won’t see the important things. In the words of En Vogue;
…’free your mind‘ and the rest will follow.
RECOMMENDATION Read ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by C. S. Lewis and listen to Envogue’s ‘Free your Mind’.
